Is HDTV in widescreen on LCD TVs?

January 3, 2008 – 3:34 pm

High definition (HD) programmes will be broadcast in 16:9 aspect ratio (width to height). This is what we commonly refer to as widescreen.

The current norm of broadcasting in 4:3 aspect ratio will be gradually phased out, allowing for better all round imaging on screen.

Most movies are filmed in widescreen and many sporting events now tend to be shown in widescreen. The shape of modern TVs means there will be no more black lines at the side or at the top of images shown.
